Topic 3 - A Closer Look: Gender and Age-Related Issues in VWD

Purpose
Advance healthcare professionals' knowledge of the issues specific to men, women, and children with VWD, and explore various treatment options

Target Audience
This activity meets the educational needs of physicians involved in the care of patients with VWD

Program Overview
To properly treat and monitor those with VWD, healthcare professionals must understand the issues and complications that many patients with VWD experience. This activity has been designed to take a closer look at these specific issues, which include:

Diagnostic Issues
—Screening infants, children and adults for VWD
—Testing pitfalls related to age and gender

Clinical Management
—Treatment approaches
—Major surgery and minor procedures
—Sports and other traumatic injuries
—Psychosocial issues

Gynecological and Obstetrical Issues
—Overview of menorrhagia
—Treatment options such as surgery, endometrial ablation, hormones, and hemostatic interventions
—Pregnancy and VWF levels, antepartum procedures, and postpartum hemorrhage

Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

—Identify the diverse needs among men, women, and children with VWD
—Explain techniques to better address these needs and thus improve treatment
—Summarize current treatment options
