Topic 7 - von Willebrand Disease (VWD): The Pharmacist's Role in Improving Patient Outcomes

Purpose
Advance healthcare professionals' knowledge of von Willebrand Disease (VWD) and improve patient outcomes through individualized therapy

Target Audience
This activity meets the needs of physicians and pharmacists involved in the care of patients with VWD

Program Overview
To facilitate best practices in the treatment of patients with VWD, it is important to highlight the integral role of the hemostasis pharmacist and how he or she works collectively with the multidisciplinary care team.

This activity will provide a detailed overview of the disorder including proper diagnosis, available therapeutic approaches, options, and situation uses (in-demand, preop and postop surgery, and prophylaxis), pharmacokinetics, dosing, monitoring, and administration. It will also describe best practices and discuss the role of the pharmacist in the hospital, hemophilia treatment center, and home-care setting.

Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Recount an in-depth overview of VWD
  • Review methods of diagnosis and current therapy options
  • Describe best practices in the treatment of VWD
  • Explain the role of the pharmacist involved in the treatment of patients with VWD
