Topic 2 - Scientific Advancement in VWD: New Evidence, New Approaches

Purpose
Advance knowledge of recent clinical evidence pertaining to von Willebrand Disease (VWD)

Target Audience
Meets the educational needs of physicians involved in the care of patients with VWD

Program Overview
Recent clinical evidence has provided new possibilities in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with VWD. This activity has been designed to explore recent diagnostic issues, including:

  • Role of screening tests
  • Importance of severe type 1 versus type 3 diagnosis
  • Collagen binding assay in the diagnosis of type 2
  • Diagnosis of type 2N
  • Genetic analysis
It will also explore current treatment issues, including:
  • FVIII/VWF concentrates and criteria for potency
  • Importance of normal multimer pattern for FVIII/VWF concentrates
  • Risk of venous thrombosis with high FVIII levels
  • Recombinant VWF concentrates

Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able to:

  • Review the recent clinical evidence applicable to the VWD patient population
  • Describe recent diagnostic issues, including new options
  • Explain current treatment options
